Externship Opporunities

Description:

An externship at LMHA provides training for those interested in concentrating on the assessment and treatment of forensic populations.  The main focus of the LMHA externship is on the assessment of juvenile and adult offenders, as well as adolescents and adults in the civil system.  Evaluations are often conducted in the community, but also sometimes take place in a correctional setting (e.g., detention facility).  The results of the psychological assessment are often used in an individual’s legal case.   Assessments regularly include self-report personality measures, cognitive testing, brief academic testing, and malingering tests, and occasionally include neuropsychological measures. Externs will assist in the evaluation of the defendants, which can include conducting interviews and obtaining collateral data. Also, externs will learn how to write reports that will be submitted to the Court. Supervision is regularly scheduled in individual weekly meetings with a primary supervisor.  Additional meetings are scheduled as needed.

Length of Program:

The externship is 12 months in duration, beginning in August. The time commitment is 16 hours per week, over a two-day period.

Qualifications:

Open to doctoral students in Ph.D. or Psy.D. programs (Clinical, Clinical-School, School, or Counseling Psychology) who will be enrolled in their third year or beyond at the time of externship. Some experience with psychological assessment required.
